Richard A. Singletary

Richard A. Singletary Ph.D

Dr. Richard A. Singletary began studying art that emphasized more of his visual images attention of works during the winter of 1994, as a self-study at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia with Dr. Babatunde Lawal and another of his compatriots, Dr. Bruce Onobrakpeya. He began to study the art of West Africa and that of Urhobo and other surrounding areas of Nigeria.

Between 1994 and 1999, Singletary completed his Doctorate of Philosophy degree in African art at Virginia Commonwealth University. He received his Master of Music degree from Norfolk State University, another Master of Arts degree from Old Dominion University, and a Bachelor of teaching degree in art and performance from Winston-Salem State University.

At the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, Singletary studied art history; he studied French at the French School at Middlebury, Vermont, and French, German, Italian, Russian, Chinese, and Japanese at Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia.

Singletary served as a volunteer with the Peace Corps in Liberia, from 1964-1966. During 1971, he studied violin in London, with Kato Havas of Rumania. Between 1971 and 1977 Singletary studied violin in the United States with Elizabeth Chapman, Gregory Barnes, and Kathleen Kover.
